Ethics of Image Manipulation

In the past few years, there has been rising discussion on the product of beauty that is sold in all forms of media. Even further, people have begun to notice the effects that image manipulation has on these ideas of beauty that have been placed in magazines and such for years now. The development of photoshop and the increasing capabilities of image manipulation have only increased the impossibility of attaining this beauty that we have been given. Here is a great video on the the possibilities of image manipulation and how it can affect our perceptions of beauty:

Fortunately, I have the great privilege of working in an environment where these issues are not so apparent. Working at a non-commercial radio station doesn't leave much room for the distortion of physical beauty, or any kind of beauty. But this is not always the case with radio. Many commercial radio stations, as a function, support businesses and companies that perpetuate these unrealistic images of beauty. By playing their commercials and encouraging people to support these businesses, they become a part of the problems themselves. Even beyond the commercials themselves, I cannot relay how many sexist and awful discussions I have heard on commercial talk shows related to the image standards that man have about women, in particular. The radio, just like every other media source, has a keen ability to perpetuate these ideals of beauty, even when they are only a voice.
